Pacific Island Training Initiative

Representatives of the FSM Public Auditors Office including Haser Hainrick, National Public Auditor and Ryan Torvik, Audit Manager met with Stephen Latimer, Program Manager for the Pacific Island Training Initiative in Honolulu on August 16, 2004 to discuss opportunities for upcoming training initiatives.

The Pacific Islands Training Initiative (PITI) is mandated with providing customized, results-oriented professional and organizational development services that enable Pacific Island governments to strengthen performance and accountability in financial management and program performance. PITI is a joint program of the U.S. Department of Interior / Office of Insular Affairs (DOI/OIA) and the Graduate School, USDA / International Institute established through an inter-agency agreement in 1991.

The meeting was an extremely beneficial exercise that resulted in the general understanding for some key new training projects that will be organized throughout the FSM. Firstly, a course titled 'Supervising and Managing Human Resources: Principles and Practices' has been scheduled for October 2004 and will include members from the Nation's four (4) Public Auditor Offices, Pohnpei State Finance, and the National Finance Department. Additionally, a week long Strategic Planning Session was arranged for January 2005 at the National Public Auditor's Office to reevaluate and realign the Office's strategic direction for the future.

We look forward to future meetings with Mr. Latimer in a continued effort to address the ongoing training needs of the Nation.
