Public Auditor Staff Join the 15th Annual Fraud Conference & Exhibition

Nearly 1,600 Anti-Fraud Practitioners gathered in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Hotel from July 11th to 16th, 2004 for the ACFE 15th Annual Fraud Conference & Exhibition hosted by the Associations of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). The FSM National Public Auditor's delegation consisted of the National Public Auditor, Haser Hainrick, Audit Manager, Ryan Torvik and Investigative Auditors' Sophia H. Pretrick and Fletcher Poll.

Every year the Association hosts a fraud conference to enhance the fraud examiner's knowledge of the latest fraud examination tools, techniques, and the opportunity to network with their peers. The 15th Annual Fraud Conference & Exhibition is in fact a three conference in one; participants can either register for one or all segments. By attending all three segments, participants get to earn 40 hours of fraud-related Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours. The three conference modules were:

1. July 11-The Pre-Conference, "Locating hidden assets" discussed how assets are hidden, methods of finding hidden assets, and recovering hidden assets.

2. July 12 to 14- Main Conference, breakout sessions and working lunches.

3. July 15 & 16- The Post Conference, divided into tracks for Auditors and Investigators.

This year's conference was rated by the ACFE as "The Most Comprehensive Anti-fraud Conference ever held." The Main Conference presented hours of productive teaching in 10 tracks with 50 breakout sessions titles stretching from "Practical Solutions to Current Fraud Issues" to "Fraud Prevention: The Latest Techniques." The keynote speakers were Honorable David Walker, U.S Comptroller General and head of the U.S General Accounting Office (GAO), Cynthia Cooper, a CPA and CFE who detected and reported the WorldCom fraud and Walt Pavlo, Former MCI Manager who subsequently stole $5.2 million in a financial statement fraud scheme. Pavlo shared insight in a fascinating presentation with the theme, "Making Right from Something Wrong."

The conference also featured an exhibit hall filled with organizations displaying their latest fraud-fighting tools and software where attendees previewed their latest anti-fraud products on the market. Some these organizations included FBI, ACL Services, Postal Inspection Services, and Ethicsline.

Training individuals who engaged in investigating fraud on how to successfully prevent, detect, and investigate fraud is one of the most effective way to combat fraud. The results of the ACFE trainings and conferences are beneficial and have proven a great impact for the Office.
